What Causes Back Sweat (and How to Tame It)

Before we dive into what causes back sweat, let’s get one thing straight: Sweating is 100% normal. We all have sweat glands (2-4 million glands, to be exact), and their primary purpose is to cool us down on hot days or after physical activity. 

As we evolved, stress or other intense emotions also triggered excessive sweating. This emotion-driven sweat signaled a need for fight or flight, which was helpful for our ancestors as they fled lions and other predators, less helpful in the modern era.

Save Your Seat (and Your Confidence)

There are some hacks that can help save your seat—and your confidence—from the dreaded sweat stain. The easiest is to carry a small towel around with you. A quick-dry towel made of a synthetic fiber (i.e. polyester or nylon) does the job, dries quickly, and fits inside most bags. Some, like this one from REI, may even be small enough to fit inside a pocket. 

There’s also less discrete options, such as sweat-proof chair covers or sitting on breathable cushions. Unless you want to bring that cushion or cover with you (more power to you if you do), these suggestions are better at-home.

Conquering Back Sweat in Everyday Situations

Now that you’re armed with the right clothing choices, anti-sweat options, and a small towel for the odd chair stain, it’s time to take on the world with confidence. Often, this includes facing some sweat-prone environments, such as the office, outdoor events, and the gym. 

Office Life

If stress sweat feels at home anywhere, it’s the office. Whether it’s a cryptic email from your boss, a tight project deadline, or a long meeting, we often feel the sweat (literally and metaphorically) at work.
